What is rock'n'roll by a singer/songwriter doing on my website? Basically, I like almost all facets of rock, albeit in moderation. JD McPherson After six years, Nite Owls has released a new album. Old fashioned rock'n'roll. A bit of post-punk freshens up some of the songs. If you like singer/songwriters, this is the right place for you.
Recorded live in the studio by the band JDs. The first two songs are good rock'n'roll. Surf rock and a bit of post-punk spice up the other songs. What would singer/songwriters be without difficult times? This album is also based on personal experiences, shaped in part by COVID-19. Not an easy time, especially for musicians.
The sound is clean. The 10 songs are varied. Unfortunately, I personally miss the dirty sound. Everything is smooth, there are no real edges, now and then a bit of post-punk shines through and then it becomes more interesting for me. Basically, I like rock'n'roll, simpler songs that live from the drive, preferably live. Or "modern" blues-rock, dirty, spiced up with stoner rock like the album Imagine the Crackle by Bellhound Choir. The comparison is not a comparison, because JD McPherson is different.
So Jan, how does a prog head get into old-school rock'n'roll? Of course, I know Bill Haley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard through my parents. So yes, I like it every now and then. JD McPherson is now a singer/songwriter and I only know this album. I intentionally didn't listen to anything from earlier, so I can only say something about Nite Owls. Personally, I like the first two songs best. Overall, the whole CD is too smooth, too clean for me. The CD itself sounds good, and what I like is the way the music is recorded together as a band in the studio. All the instruments are easy to locate. The CD is simply designed. If you like singer/songwriters, a bit of surf rock, post-punk, and straight American-style rock'n'roll, you can get it here from September 27, 2024.
