Retro Pop, Rock. CD, Digipack. 2026, Denmark
Vinyl Floor was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2007 and currently consists of the brothers Daniel Pedersen and Thomas Charlie Pedersen, along with various guest musicians. “Balancing Act” is their sixth studio album.
I became aware of the Danish band Vinyl Floor through themselves, who sent me an email. Since I'm passionate about "small" bands that still produce their own music, regardless of genre, i'm happy to write a review.
"Balancing Act" is an album about trying to find balance in life and searching for beauty and meaning in a world full of chaos, betrayal, uncertainty, and false promises. A world that seems to be out of balance.
On "Balancing Act," I hear a lot of retro pop/rock, Beatles vibes ("Puppets Laureate," "Mr. Rubinstein," "I'm On The Upside"), Britpop ("Less Dystopian Book") with subtle progressive elements, which we also find in what I consider the album's centerpiece, "Jacaranda Blossoms." "Back Of My Hands" reminds me of the prog songs of Phideaux, whose work I greatly admire. The last Song "Balancing Act" is a great closer. I also mustn't forget the ballad "Swan Of Eileen," which reminds me of RPWL and which I really like. All of this is melodically packaged, with symphonic and electronic elements.
Conclusion. On first listen, I found the album bland and boring. On second (louder) listen, the album opened up. What was bland and boring became interesting. Here it sounds like The Beatles, there like the Beach Boys, here hints of Phideaux ("Back Of My Hand"), there progressive rock, or 90s Britpop. Handmade and honest. More varied than expected. And not boring at all. Vinyl Floor manages to infuse this all with their own unique style. A fine album.
