How do you review an album whose music isn't usually your cup of tea? Quite simply: Does the music evoke something in you? And how does it do that? Singer-songwriters aren't really my thing, except for Bob Dylan or Neil Young. Bruce Springsteen. Those are, of course, superlatives. With his seventeenth album, "It's Me, Mario Vol. 1," I see Mario Knapp's Mobile Ethnic Minority somewhere in that tradition – with their own unique touch. This album doesn't grab me with its tempo or loud-quiet dynamics. Nor with major social upheavals. It grabs me with its authenticity: a quality that only a few in the music business still exude. Like Seasick Steve, for example.

So what do I mean by authentic? I hear the fingers gliding over the strings, the way they resonate, the subtle nuances of the music. It's Mario's voice, raw and unadulterated. He could be sitting right in my living room. Even though I had to get used to it at first. Now, after several listens, the vocals are perfect. They couldn't be any other way; they work. Here we also hear the click of a Zippo lighter. We learn how Mario thinks about self-determination, individuality, love, and appreciation. And I completely agree with him that it's the little things that can be especially valuable. A glass of wine, a comfortable armchair, the lights dimmed. And then putting on this tranquil album. Slowing down. Sorting out my thoughts. I sense a certain romance in the lyrics, the way the words and music intertwine. Solid, honest, calm music.

What do I really think? I don't want to compare Mobile Ethnic Minority to Bruce Springsteen. But especially his older albums like "Nebraska" or "The River" evoke similar feelings like "It's Me, Mario Vol. 1." This is honest music. Neither the vocals nor the music have to be perfect. It just has to work. This music is real.
