Echoes In Time by Sills & Smith
Sills & Smith
„Echoes inTime“
Rock, Folk. Canada 2015
In 2015, Jeremy Sills and Frank Smith released their fifth album in Canada. It's a blend of country, southern blues, folk, rock, jazz, and subtle prog elements that set "Echoes In Time" apart. Take your time, tune out the world, and listen. This beautiful album needs time to unfold, like a rose.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm not a big fan of country and jazz. Sills & Smith, however, are very good at fusing these different genres. "We Are Receiving" starts very quietly and sounds incredibly melodic. In "Slicing Up The Clouds," we hear Tara Holloway's emotional voice in the background. For me, it's one of the strongest tracks. The dreamy track "The Chalice/The Blade" is, in turn, very musically and lyrically sophisticated. "One Step Behind" is the first ballad, and its melancholy would fit perfectly into the film Blade Runner. Probably the most progressive song is "The News," which, at over seven minutes, is also the longest track. The keyboard has a rather pastoral vibe, and the electric guitar has distinct Pink Floyd influences. The heart of the album? Absolutely. Anyone who thinks the remaining songs aren't good because I haven't specifically mentioned them is mistaken. They're all well-crafted; I just want you to discover them for yourselves.
I'll say what I really think right away. After the second listen, the musical nuances revealed themselves, and since then, "Echoes In Time" has been on repeat. A successful fusion of different genres. Wonderful.
The various guest musicians contribute mandolin, saxophone, trumpet, and organ, resulting in a well-rounded album. Philip Victor Bova produced it all at Bova Sound Studio. Every note is perfect, and the overall sound is balanced and organic.
Sills & Smith? Highly recommended.
