In 1995, Arjen Lucassen, former Vengeance guitarist, released his first album under the name Ayreon. Arjen frequently brought in numerous guest musicians for his projects, often to produce concept albums. And when Arjen calls, they come, though this wasn't as pronounced on "The Final Experiment" as it would be on later albums. Among others, Ian Parry, Edward Reekers, and Hamburg's Lenny Wolf contributed vocals. Arjen himself played many of the instruments. While "The Final Experiment" is the first album released, its intricate narrative structure makes it feel like album number three to me. The backstory tells of the Alphans, who are destroyed by their AI, "Frame." The android TH-1 helps ten Alphans escape to planet Y, where he announces that he will become the new "Frame" (The Source). The resulting Forevers repeat the mistake of their ancestors, becoming immortal but losing their emotions. To prevent their own demise, they send their DNA to Earth via a comet. The dinosaurs become extinct in the process. Unfortunately, this results in the birth of us humans ("01011001"). We wouldn't be us if we didn't repeat the mistakes of the Alphans and Forever. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

And that's where "The Final Experiment" comes in. In 2084, things look grim for humanity, as total nuclear annihilation looms. Scientists develop a machine that allows messages in the form of visions to be sent into the past. The blind minstrel Ayreon from the Middle Ages (6th century) receives these messages and is supposed to help avert the impending catastrophe. Naturally, no one believes Ayreon, and he is killed as a heretic. So much for saving humanity.

Musically, the album offers progressive rock, symphonic rock, and all sorts of musical intricacies. At times, the music evokes ancient sounds (Knights of the Round Table, Merlin), interwoven with a spacey atmosphere. Particularly successful: The buzzing of the insects in the track “Nature’s Dance” using a synthesizer.

My highlights are "Eyes Of Time", "Sail Away To Avalon", "Listen To The Waves", "The Charm Of The Seer" and "Ayreon's Fate". It's epic, spacey, folky, rocking, and metal. Sung and played by outstanding musicians.

My verdict on Ayreon's debut album is positive. It lays the foundation for the concept behind the five albums that followed. I call it the "Forever Cycle." The production sounds perfect, one of the hallmarks of Arjen Lucassen's Ayreon work. I recommend giving it a listen if you like rock operas.
