Antimatter
„Alternative Matter“
2-CD Compilation Digibook. 2010. Alternative, Dark Rock, Acoustic.
Founded in England in 1998, the band Antimatter released their first compilation in 2010, ten years after their debut album "Savior". The tracks are taken from their first two trip-hop albums, "Savior" and "Lights Out" (the second album, "Lights Out," isn't trip-hop in my opinion), and their subsequent dark rock albums "Planetary Confinement" and "Leaving Eden." The tracks are presented as live versions, demos, or alternative versions.
CD A contains 11 songs. The production quality is, as always with Antimatter and Mick Moss, very high. Some of the versions are by former co-founder Duncan Patterson, who left Antimatter after "Planetary Confinement" in 2005. Aside from the remixes, which aren't always great, I really like the alternative versions.
The second CD also features 11 well-produced songs. I particularly like the acoustic versions on both CDs.
I often dislike compilations; they usually just feature the same songs, demos are rarely better than the originals, and remixes are seldom innovative. However, this compilation includes not only remixes (some of which aren't entirely well made), but also live versions and demos that didn't made it onto the albums. I particularly enjoy the acoustic versions. There's always something new to discover on this compilation, and I recommend it to more than just die-hard fans.
