„Man on the Shore“, 2024
Ozul is the project of Paulo Chavarría, a Norwegian-Costarican filmmaker. The debut album “Provenance” and now album two, “Man on the Shore” are only available digitally. Bandcamp Ozul.
I don't usually present digital albums, but I'm deviating from that with Ozul because I liked both albums right away.
But this is only about “Man on the Shore”.
Paulo Chavarría plays all the instruments, writes all the lyrics, sings and does the mixing and mastering. The music is multifaceted and ranges from prog, ambient, electronic to psychedelic rock. I see influences from Porcupine Tree and Ayreon.
Paulo was inspired by a true story of an unknown man who was washed ashore dead in Norway. The documentary "The bothersome Father", also by Paulo, deals with legal issues surrounding fathers' custody rights in Norway. This gave rise to the idea for this album. What could have happened to this man? It's about guilt, loneliness and parental care.
Technically there is nothing to complain about. Everything sounds great and the singing is pleasant. The style is clearly prog rock, melodic, sometimes poppy, epic, rocky and even metal, with distinctive instrumental parts. It is similar to The Pineapple Thief, Porcupine Tree and Ayreon, but that doesn't mean it isn't unique. Highly recommended!
