„Into the Electric Castle“
Progressive Rock/Metal. Limitierte Doppel-CD. 1998
Following "The Final Experiment" in 1995, Arjen Lucassen followed up thematically in 1998 with "Into the Electric Castle" (incidentally, also the name of Arjen's recording studio). Six albums form a long narrative thread revolving around the Forever. For me, this album is number four in my interpretation of that thread. Here, eight people from different eras are abducted into a liminal space without space and time. A voice puts the protagonists through various tests. In the end, the voice reveals itself as Forever of the Stars. Thematically, the humans are already present, and we are witnessing an experiment. Because the extraterrestrial Forever created us from their DNA to study our emotions. They have lost their own.
The lineup of guest musicians is diverse: Anneke van Giersbergen (ex The Gathering), Fish (ex Marillion), Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), Damian Wilson (ex Threshold), Clive Nolan (Pendragon, Arena), and others. Each musician is in a class of their own. "Into The Electric Castle" is Ayreon's first double album, resulting in a playing time of approximately 105 minutes.
Each singer has their own distinct role. They convey the music through imagery. Like almost all of Ayreon's albums, this one is a concept album. A journey through space and time, marked by pride, hate, and love. All the trials the protagonists must endure are intertwined with emotions. And the band succeeds in generating vivid soundscapes from them.
Musically, it features epic music, prog, rock, metal, spacey keyboards, a rich story, and good vocals. A grand rock/space opera. Sounds like a conclusion...
Attention! Superlatives abound! What Arjen Lucassen has accomplished here is truly magnificent! Getting all these musicians together and then motivating them to deliver top-notch performances. Every note is perfectly placed, everything is flawlessly played, and the lyrics are well-crafted and atmospheric. Ayreon's greatest strength, once again, lies in the visuals. They conjure vivid images in your mind. It's pure cinematic magic! The album as a whole is the highlight for me. My recommended tracks are Song 1, “Welcome To The New Dimension” and Song 2, “Isis And Osiris”, as well as “The Decision Tree” and “Cosmic Fusion”. There's something for everyone.
Order according to the release date of the albums in the "Forever" cycle, as I call it.
